SAG Membership (September 2016)
The membership of the Global Shelter Cluster (GSC) Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) is renewed each year at the Global Shelter Cluster meeting. Please let us know if your organisation would like to become a member of the GSC SAG by expressing your interest here. The deadline for expressions of interest is Friday 30 September.
Shelter Cluster 2016 Photography Competition (September 2016)
We are proud to introduce the first Global Shelter Cluster photo competition (http://sheltercluster.org/photo-competition). This is the first contest of its kind, it will allow anyone to participate and challenge the way humanitarian shelter is conventionally represented in pictures.

Teleconference on Mosul (July 2016)
The Global Shelter Cluster (GSC) is calling a teleconference to brief on the preparedness for the upcoming Mosul offensive in Iraq. The teleconference will take place on the 27 July at 3pm Geneva time / 4pm Baghdad time / 9am New York / 11pm Canberra.
The Global Shelter Cluster (GSC) has created the GSC HelpDesk to provide direct support to humanitarian actors on issues related to shelter. The GSC HelpDesk can be accessed through this email address email@example.com.
As announced, there will be three GSC events from 3-7 October. The three meetings will take place in Geneva. More information on the venue and agenda will be shared closer to the meeting.
The GSC Mid-Year Teleconference took place on the 10 June 2016. It was attended by 30 participants from 17 organizations including members of shelter cluster coordination teams from 5 countries. The minutes have been finalized and can be found together with the agenda and background documents here.
Shelter Cluster NFI Working Group (July 2016)
As communicated in the Global Shelter Cluster update on 24 May 2016 a working group has been created to gather and disseminate good practices on NFIs and meeting household needs. This email is to provide a short update on next steps and confirm interest of any other agencies and individuals.
This is a gentle reminder that the Global Shelter Cluster (GSC) will be holding its annual mid-year teleconference on the 10 June from 14.00 to 15.30 Geneva time.

Launch of the masters level short course in “Humanitarian Shelter Coordination”- 1 August 2016 (May 2016)
We are pleased to announce the 14th edition of the master level short course in “Humanitarian Shelter Coordination”. This course is jointly organized by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). It draws upon their leadership of the Shelter Cluster.
This Working Group will gather and disseminate good practices on NFIs and meeting household needs. More information can be found in this summary. This group is led by UNHCR and IFRC. Those organisations interested in participating in this Working Group can do so by contacting Gregg McDonald from UNHCR and Corinne Treherne from IFRC.
As we are working on the next edition of Shelter Projects, we would like to know your opinion on this publication and its website. Please let us know your thoughts so that the next edition is even better. You can also submit an abstract for a project that you would like included in the publication using this form. The deadline is the end of May. More information on this Working Group can be found here.
Ecuador and new GSC Working Groups (April 2016)
A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck northern Ecuador at 6:58 PM local time on 16 April 2016. According to the latest report issued by Ecuador’s National Secretariat for Risk Management on April 25, a total of 655 people were reported to have died, 41 people were missing and 4,605 were injured. A total of 29,067 people have sought shelter in emergency collective centres.
The Global Shelter Cluster (GSC) Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) has created two new Working Groups: Construction Standards WG and GBV in Shelter Programming WG. As a reminder, there are two other Working Groups currently active: Cash Working Group and Shelter Projects 2015-2016 Working Group.
GSC Working Groups and Shelter Cluster Fiji (March 2016)
During the last Global Shelter Cluster (GSC) meeting a number of recommendations were put forward on the GSC’s work for 2016 and beyond in line with the GSC Strategy 2013-2017. These recommendations were translated by the GSC Strategic Advisory Group (SAG) into action points during the SAG Retreat.
Category 5 Tropical Cyclone Winston, one of the most severe ever recorded in the South Pacific, hit Fiji on 20 and 21 February. Approximately 28,000 houses were damaged or destroyed across the 12 most affected areas as a result of the cyclone. It is estimated that about 112,800 people are in need of shelter. The government declared a State of Natural Disaster for 30 days and officially requested international assistance.
Humanitarian Shelter Coordination Training: application open and sponsorship available (January 2016)
We would like to bring to your attention the 13th edition of the master level short course in “Humanitarian Shelter Coordination”. This course is jointly organized by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC). It draws upon their leadership of the Global Shelter Cluster.
