Multi Sectorial Rapid Assessment Dashboard Badakhshan Floods 7 May 2025
Badakhshan province in northeastern Afghanistan often faces severe floods, landslides, earthquakes, and heavy rainfall. Flash floods in the summer season from melting snow destroy infrastructure, homes, farmland, and livestock, causing loss of life. Remote areas with limited access to basic services are especially affected, making immediate response vital to support these communities.
On May 3, 2025, a flood in Yumgan district, Badakhshan province, resulted in significant damage to shelters, agricultural lands, livestock facilities, a health Centre, and water canals.
The initial report from ANDMA Badakhshan through the Emergency Operating Center (EoC) stated that approximately 233 households (1,631 individuals) were affected across several villages including Farghamu, Gawhar, Hazrat Sayeed, Kalafzar, Jow, Ergheshk, and the center of Yumgan district.
Following the incident, on May 4, 2025, an ad-hoc OCT was convened by OCHA to deploy assessment teams to evaluate the extent of damage and determine the number of affected families along with their immediate needs.
Due to the need for additional teams in the specified district, three Joint Assessment Teams (JATs) were formed to assess the caseload.
These teams consisted of:
1. IOM, AKAH, and ANDMA
2. IOM, ACF, and ANDMA
3. IOM, ACTED, AFGA/UNFPA, and ANDMA
IOM led the teams to assess and determine the needs of households affected in the district. The assessment found that 270 out of 300 households were either destroyed or severely impacted by the flood, making them eligible for immediate assistance. Following the assessment, the JATs observed that the affected communities require Non-Food Items (NFIs), Food Items (FIs), Family Tents (FTs), Multi-Purpose Cash Assistance (MPCA), hygiene kits, dignity kits, water trucking, and health services. The disaster incident has caused the loss of all their belongings.
