Description

Since 21 August 2024 heavy monsoon rain, low pressure over Bay of Bengal with extremely heavy rainfall in neighboring Indian states Meghalay and Tripura and sudden water level rising in Gomti, Muhuri, Feni, Halda etc. rivers have caused a flash flood in 11 Districts of Bangladesh. Out of those Feni, Noakhali, Cumilla, Lakshmipur and Khagrachari are the worst impacted districts. Due to the flood around 5.8 millon people are affected. To date, in 11 districts 153,738 partially damaged Houses 53,581 fully damaged houses are reported (Source: SOS Form, Dept. Of Disaster Management). Large areas in the Eastern regions remain submerged, and the affected district administration estimates that it will take another week for the water to recede. This is an ongoing challenge, and the full extent of damage to shelters remains unknown. About 4.5 million Kutcha and Jhupri houses common in the districts affected are susceptible to damage and destruction. Immediate shelter needs are cash support for reconstruction, tarpaulins/ tents, shelter toolkit, corrugated galvanized iron sheets, bamboo, timber, and other Non-food Items (NFI) for the HH level including solar lighting solution, clothing, mosquito nets and basic bedding.
