- The text needs to be read in order to understand the graphics, but they are reasonably clear. The aim was to fit the IEC on one side of A4 paper for simplicity and the graphics are a little squashed as a result.

- The imagery is clear, and is completely understandable - but only to a limited audience (with technical knowledge e.g. carpenters, engineers) in limited contexts (only showing one connection).

Technical Accuracy

- This IEC is aimed at non-engineered buildings and uses an 'order of magnitude' approach to indicate how much additional strength hurricane strapping might give to a basic timber connection. It is based on physical, laboratory test results.

- Its technical accuracy is academically proven. However, it would arguably not be useful in emergency contexts for the generalist. It is definitely targeted at a technical/academic audience.

- As it stands, the whole messaging of the IEC would likely be lost to the majority of intended audiences. The content would need to be extensively simplified to provide value to the intended audiences. If using this IEC, you would definitely need to incorporate thorough training/orientation. Including a reference to PSEA (e.g. All humanitarian aid is free. No sexual or other favour may be requested in exchange for humanitarian assistance) could help to mitigate potential harm to affected families receiving the items. Could include messaging on potential fire hazards/sharp objects. Could include a referral number and/or messaging on who to approach with any questions or concerns.

Overall

This is a new IEC material so there has been no evaluation of its effectiveness so far. But it distils physical testing results into a useful indication of the order of magnitude improvements possible with the addition of hurricane strapping to basic timber connections.

The whole messaging of the IEC would be lost to the majority of intended audiences. Needs to be extensively simplified to have any value. Wonderful academic piece but not useful for humanitarian action as it stands.
