Ethiopia ESNFI Cluster North Wello and South Wello (Amhara Region) IDP Site Conditions Assessment Report March 19-23-2025
The Ethiopia Emergency Shelter and Non-Food Item (ES/NFI) Cluster conducted a field assessment from March 19–23, 2025, across five Internally Displaced Person (IDP) sites in North and South Wello Zones, Amhara Region. The sites house around 15,000 displaced individuals facing worsening conditions. Overcrowded, aging, and damaged shelters offer no privacy, safety, or accommodations for people with disabilities. Non-food items (NFIs) are scarce due to infrequent support since 2022, with many IDPs lacking essentials like bedding and kitchen items.
Access to water, sanitation, health care, food, and education is inconsistent, exacerbating vulnerabilities. Protection risks, such as gender-based violence, remain high, especially in unsafe shelter environments. Humanitarian responses have fallen short, with only 39,673 of the 157,177 targeted individuals reached in 2024 due to funding, security, and operational challenges. Immediate action is crucial to address shelter repairs, new construction, and targeted NFI provision, particularly for the most vulnerable groups.
