Description

Following the passage of hurricane Dean in Jamaica in August 2008, the Jamaica Red
Cross in partnership with the French Red Cross and supported by ECHO implemented a
reconstruction program to assist with the repair of 70 roofs and the construction of 40
wooden houses.
The French Red Cross created this handbook to train some builders and carpenters men
and women all over 5 parishes in new construction techniques, especially a new design of
roof according to the Jamaica Building Code. This handbook also explains how to make
reinforced concrete, build foundations and reinforce wooden houses including the use of
hurricane straps. It also gives some tips on how to prepare the house before a disaster
occurs. (From description.)
