The IEC does not include a whole lot of information about how to place and site shelters.

Overall

This IEC is a how to build manual for the "OXFAM-EMERGENCY SHELTER". As the IEC was based on a discontinued model of prestocked shelter it is of limited long term use. The shelter was based on the (retrospectively flawed) assumption that LDPE pipe is commonly available, and a suitable material for temporary shelters using nationally avaialbe materials. this lead to requests to stock starter kits, and hence to make collapsible it versions. The shelters were developed and tested in multiple field locations. However although they were based on non- structural materials (LDPE), the real challenge was one of logistics. LDPE is heavy and bulky and better construction materials are available. Arguably the project pushed forward tent development and the ensuing designs of tunnel tents, and now dome tents (which use plastic sheeting skins) were very close in form, but manufactured to significantly reduce transportation weight and volume.
