Bali. Plan International/UNHCR, 29/08/2020 distribution shelter/NFI kits

Highlights

There have been a series of military operations in Belo since the beginning of August and have caused mass displacements. The operation  of the 26th and 29th August was particular and  that led to the displacement of over 6,000 persons. Women and children constitute the greater part of the displaced population. Many houses and businesses were destroyed. The violence also caused the displacement of 170 IDP mainly Bororo Fulani who ran away from violence specifically targeting them. Majority of them are children and self-settled in Bamum living condition is worsening.

Need analysis

The IDPs newly displaced are living in huts that have leaking grass roofs. They lack every basic NFIs and some sleep on patches of picked mattresses and clothes. There is no latrine and no source of drinking water. They practice open defecation. The situation in this locality requires urgent action. ARRM has been activated and OCHA in consultation with partners are mobilizing resources to conduct MSNA

Response

1538 households were assisted during the month of August 2020 South West :UNHCR and partner Plan international assisted 536 households in Buea and Tiko all within Fako division in the South West region. IOM assisted 85 households in Kumbe with shelter kits. North West :NRC distributed 200 NFI kits the Babanki and Bambui (120 in Babanki and 80 in Bambui) in Tubah Sub division of Mezam Division. This activity reached out to 1280 individuals in these communities. The items that were distributed included (2 Aluminium pots, 2 Jerry Cans, a 10L bowl, 6 plastic plates, 6 plastic cups, 6 table spoons, 6 plastic cups, 4 reusable pads, 4 cotton under wears, 6 laundry soap, 6 bathing soaps, a 20 L plastic bucket with lid, 15 L bucket without lid, 1 pottie). IOM assisted 184 households with shelter kits (76 in Mah, 32 in Mbonso and 76 in Yeh) South West UNHCR and partner Plan international assisted 536 households in Buea and Tiko all within Fako division in the South West region. These overcrowded households visibly needed more assistance in NFIs and Plan International is currently making provisions to add to the number of NFI kits provided. IOM assisted 85 households in Kumbe with shelter kits. North West NRC distributed 200 NFI kits the Babanki and Bambui (120 in Babanki and 80 in Bambui) in Tubah Sub division of Mezam Division. This activity reached out to 1280 individuals in these communities. IOM assisted 184 households with shelter kits (76 in Mah, 32 in Mbonso and 76 in Yeh) Elsewhere, 800 households benefited from assistance in core relief items as UNHCR through its partner Plan International carried out distribution in some highly affected communities in Bali. Close to 8613 persons were reached with core relief items in villages such as Gungong, Mbufung, Jam Jam, Mbeluh/Medum, Mbadmande, Kopin, Bali Centre, Njenka all in Bali subdivision in Mezam division of the North West region.

Gaps / challenges

Threats from NSAGs is still a significant deterrent in the delivery of humanitarian aid in both the NW/SW regions - Illegal checkpoints and demand for money from NSAGs is recurrent especially along areas with limited state security presence
