Greening The Response- Mercy-USA Pistachio and Hazelnut Endocarp Shell Case Study
The use of diesel has a negative impact on human health and the environment as well as contributing to many fire incidents, mainly in camps. Mercy-USA, an active member of the SNFI cluster, was the first organization to implement a project to support the heating needs using Pistachio and Hazelnut Endocarp Shell through cash modality.
Pistachio and Hazelnut Endocarp Shells" refer to the hard, protective outer shells of pistachio and hazelnut seeds. These shells are often considered as by-products or waste in the production of pistachios and hazelnuts. However, they have found an innovative and eco-friendly use as a biomass fuel, similar to firewood, for heating purposes.
The endocarp shells of pistachios and hazelnuts are predominantly composed of lignocellulosic material, which makes them an excellent source of renewable energy when burned. These shells have a relatively high calorific value, meaning they can produce a significant amount of heat energy, making them a viable alternative to traditional firewood or fossil fuels for heating.
