Highlights
- Between 18 and 19 September 2021 the IDP families in six settlements were ordered to vacate the land of their settlements without prior notice. These IDPs lived there over the past 10 years .
- Somalia Shelter cluster partners have endorsed a new kit: The Emergency Shelter Toolkit. This tool kit will help displaced households to rapidly construct their own shelters. This will be help beneficiaries in times when funding available is not sufficiient to provide them with the complete emergency shelter kit

Need analysis
Around 3.2 million people are in need of Shelter and NFI assistance in Somalia. According to PRMN report, conflict and drought has displaced over 593,000 people between January and September 2021. Most of the displaced have arrived in Banadir, Baidoa, Jowhar, Beletweyne, Luuq, Doolow, Gaalkacy, Cadaado, and Xudur districts.The displaced are in urgent need of emergency shelter and NFI according to partner assessments. Additional funding is urgently required to respond to the displacements and to pre-position the NFI and shelter items for potential displacements in near future.
Response
In September 2021, the Cluster Partners reached 16,806 people with non-food items (NFI) kits; and 1,942 people with shelter assistance. Cumulatively in 2021, the Shelter Cluster partners have reached 216,011 individuals (9%) of 2.3 Million targeted with NFI assistance, and 132,749 individuals (6%) of the 2.4 million targeted with shelter assistance.
Gaps / challenges
- There are 8,036 NFI kits and 2,000 shelter kits in stock stock countrywide. This is not sufficient to respond to the shelter and NFI needs of the newly displaced population as well as the needs of the IDPs living in protracted situation.
- Funding is urgently required to respond to the displacements and to pre-position the NFI and shelter items for potential displacements in near future.
