Need analysis

According to PRMN report, over1,225,000 people have been displaced by floods, drought and conflict between January and May 2023. Most of the displaced have arrived in Mogadishu, Ceel Dheer, Dhusamareeb, Garoowe, Laas Canood, Xaradheere, Cadaado, Buhoodle, El barde, Saakow, Bossaso, Baardheere, Belet Xawo, and Baidoa districts. These have joined around 1.4 million people displaced by drought between Jan 2021 and December 2022 and another 1.14M displaced due to conflict during the same period.

Response

In May 2023, the Cluster Partners reached 52,439 people with non-food items (NFI) kits; and 37,758 people with shelter assistance. Cumulatively in 2023, using the new methodology of eliminating overlap for households who have received both NFI and Shelter assistance, the Shelter Cluster partners reached 500,256 individuals (35%) of 1.4 million people targeted with NFI and NFI assistance.

Gaps / challenges

  • Prices of shelter commodities have increased sharply in the recent past affecting delivery of assistance e.g. through cash.
  • Flooding and conflict has made it difficult to deliver assistance in some areas
  • Failure to identify shelter needs in famine prevention makes it difficult to advocate for shelter response
