Highlights

According to PRMN report, a significant number of 215,638 individuals have been displaced between January 1st and May 31st 2024. The primary reason for displacement was due to floods, conflict and security.

The top five regions that have received the highest number of newly displaced individuals are Hiraan, Lower Juba, Gedo, Bay and Middle Juba regions. The report highlights that the second most urgent priority need reported is shelter.

According to the latest PRMN data, the number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) during the period of January 1st to May 31st, 2024, totaled 215,638.

The top 5 regions receiving the highest number of IDP arrivals were:

  • Hiraan - 53,902 arrivals
  • Lower Juba - 44,459 arrivals
  • Gedo - 25,188 arrivals
  • Bay - 20,211 arrivals
  • Middle Juba - 13,902 arrival

in terms of reported priority needs, shelter was cited as the second top priority needs (30%).

The main triggers for the newly displaced people were:

  • Floods - 112,855 displaced
  • Conflict and insecurity - 74,593 displaced

Response

In May 2024, the Cluster Partners have reached a total of 46,473 people through its response. Among them, 41,587 people were provided with non-food items (NFI) kits. additionally, the cluster provided 4,886 people with shelter assistance. Cumulatively, the cluster has reached  640,682 people between January and May 2024. 

Gaps / challenges

  • Funding is urgently required to respond to the displacement and to pre-position NFI and shelter items for potential displacements in near future.
  • Shelter cluster has been underfunded affecting humanitarian shelter response in timely and effective manner.
  • Due to overwhelming shelter needs, lack of security of tenure and severe underfunding, the shelter and NFI needs of the displaced people are largely unmet.
